Ham and cheese melts are classic, easy and so tasty! They are related to the all-time-childhood-memory sandwich, the Grilled Cheese. This sandwich is just a bit more mature, with it's addition of ham, making it heartier and even more flavorful.

Everyone loves melts - children especially. (Who wouldn't like a sandwich with melted cheese on it?)

There are many ways to make a melt - open faced, closed, with or without veggies, with or without meat, with a variety of toppings, plain, and more.

Try this simple recipe to get started. It's delicious, and can be made in just minutes!

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of Rye Bread, or a Italian Bread sliced in half lengthwise
  • 1 Tbsp Dijon Mustard
  • 1 Tbsp Butter
  • 4 slices of roasted Ham, or your favorite Ham
  • 2 slices of Provolone or Swiss Cheese
  • fresh ground Black Pepper

Optional Additional Toppings:

  • 1 thin slice of Onion, or chopped Green Onions
  • Banana Pepper rings
  • thinly sliced Bell Pepper
  • 2 slices of Tomato

Directions

In a Broiler:

Preheat your broiler.

Lightly toast your bread, using the broiler or your toaster.

Spread mustard on 1/2 of your bread or roll. Spread butter on the other.

Add ham and toppings on top of the mustard. Add ground pepper.

Place the 2 slices of cheese on top of everything and broil the sandwiches open for 4-6 minutes, until cheese is melted.

Close the sandwich and enjoy.

On the Stove:

Spread mustard on both halves of sandwich bread. Add ham, toppings, pepper, and cheese. Close the sandwich.

Melt butter in a skillet. Add your sandwich.

Cook on medium heat for about 4-6 minutes on each side, until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.

Tip: I cover the skillet with a lid while I cook the first side of the sandwich to make sure that the heat reaches all the way to the inside of the sandwich. Then I try to cook the 2nd side uncovered so that it doesn't get too steamy under there. 🙂
